Event Three: California Science Center

The California Science Center is a place that I had been many times before. Growing up in Los Angeles, it was a very popular field trip location for elementary and middle school classes. However, visiting this museum after taking this class, I had viewed it very differently. Although the museum is focused on science as its name indicates, there are many other aspects to the museum and one is the way it incorporates art.

Before you even enter the museum, you can notice the architecture and art that was involved in the creation and design of the museum. Near the ticket office right before the entrance doors, there is a big circular overhead feature. It provides shade at the entrance but it also has a very interesting design. There are small metal balls hanging from the top of it and it seems to mimic a consolation of stars. It clearly has the look of something including science but is also something that has beauty and is designed to be that way.

There are many exhibits in the museum that are open to the public including a history of dogs, transportation, the Endeavor space shuttle, and IMAX theaters. However, there was one exhibit that most relates to our class and I think that was the ecosystems exhibit. Here there was the clear information of the science of ecosystems. The first thing you see upon entering this exhibit is a video showing clips of the beauty of nature from kelp forests in the ocean to lava flowing from volcanoes. The presentation clearly was done with photographers and videographers who used their skills to show nature. Moving further through the exhibit there were different areas for different types of ecosystems. Inside each there were interactive activities that shared the information. There were also the recreations of many of the ecosystems. The desert was a very cool room as there were the plants and landscape you would see in the desert. There was even a recreation of a flash flood. I think that by allowing visitors to enter these exhibits and feel like they are entering the place they are learning about makes it very effective. The connection of art and science really is seen in this museum and specifically this exhibit.

I think that this was a very worth while event. Even though this class is over, I would highly recommend this museum to the students in this class. This museum and the permanent exhibits are free yet there is so much to be learned and gained from a trip here both in the fun you have as well as the demonstration of the connection of art and science.

Week Four: Art and Medicine

Medicine and art are generally never thought of together. These are the competing fields with very different ideas about them. However, there are many connections between medicine and art and many of these connections are very important to the success and importance of medicine.   Personally for me, the first thing that I thought about when I saw that this week’s topic was plastic surgery. This seems like something that embodies both art and medicine to a very high degree. In her third lecture on medical technologies and art, Professor Vesna argues that plastic surgery can be seen as art in two different senses. First with the doctor being an artist to change someone’s looks. She also makes to point that the patient can be the artist as they can use the surgery to comment on culture’s notions about beauty. She uses the example of Orlan. She is a French performer who has had 9 cosmetic surgeries all directed as a live performance. She even has her body being transformed to ...

Week Eight: Art and Nanotechnology

Nanoscience is a field that really opens up our minds and our worlds to a whole new field of ideas and understanding. So much so that new scientific methodologies have been created to just be able to study and understand this world of science. Nano technology was the idea of understanding things on a nanoscale, measuring things by the nanometer.   Richard Feynman was very important in the theoretical discovery and growth of nano science technology. He developed the basic idea that we can use nanotechnology to nameplate things on the scale of the atom. He also discovered that when we shrink thinks to the nanoscale, the laws of physics can change. One way that nanotechnology is used and seen today is in many of the products we use including cosmetics and clothing, but it isn't a very new concept and can be seen used as far back as ancient Roman times. One major way that it was used was in art, specifically through color. Nano sizing materials can play interesting roles on those...

Week Two: Art and Math

Mathematics and art are two fields that are often disconnected   with each other as people who are in one typically do not associate themselves with the other. However, it has become very clear that there is really a huge relationship between these two fields and that they can both influence each other. Professor Vesna’s lecture discusses the ways that mathematics have influenced art. One very important way that this has happened is through the use of computers and the influence of technology on art. Another source that provided insight to the influence of math on art is Marc Frantz’ “Vanishing Points and Looking at Art” where he discusses the mathematical idea of the vanishing point and how the elements of nature and reality can be manipulated in art. One final insight towards the relation of mathematics and art is Robert Lang’s origami. He says that “mathematics both describes and enables the creation of beautiful forms” which is something that can bee seen in his beautiful ...
